BioPRYN - Pregnancy Test for Cattle

BioPRYN is a blood pregnancy test that delivers fast, accurate, safe and economical pregnancy diagnostic results. With an accuracy rate of 99% in detecting open cows, this test an ideal pregnancy checking tool. The false-positive rate is approximately 5%, with the variance being attributed to early embryonic death not test inaccuracy. BioPRYN was developed at BioTracking,LLC in Moscow, Idaho and has been used to test the pregnancy status over over 2 million cows.

IDEXX Milk Pregnancy Test

The IDEXX Milk Pregnancy Test, is an enzyme-linked immunoassay for the detection of pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) in bovine milk as a marker for pregnancy. The IDEXX Milk pregnancy Test confirms pregnancy status from 35 days post breeding and from 60 days post calving. This enables producers to identify open cows to ensure re-breeding in a timely manner. Sensitivity: 98.8%, Specificity: 97.4%, Rechecks: 4% of total tested (3% pregnant & 1% open).

Why use the blood test

"The economics of BioPRYN are truly driven by increasing the frequency of preg checking your cows. One of the reasons a dairy does a vet check is to find which cows are open so they can be short cycled or put on a breeding program and rebred. The average dairy has a heat detection rate of around 36%, meaning about 1/3 of the open cows are found in heat and rebred. The rest of the open cows are not discovered until the next preg check. If a dairy is only doing a preg check every 6 weeks, then there is a high probability of open cows not being discovered until the next 6 week check. With the average cost of an open cow approximately $4/day, these missed opportunity cows can cost a producer $16-144 per cow. If a dairy did a weekly preg check using BioPryn, cows should never pass 36 days before being checked thus reducing days open and increasing profitability." (Dr. Bruce Hill, Livestock Veterinary Services). REMEMBER: A producer should consult with their herd veterinarian for implementation of the best protocol for their farm.

IDEXX Milk Pregnancy Test

Pregnancy drives performance for dairy and beef operations. Improved pregnancy rates mean greater profitability. Two factors greatly influence this performance: the timing of pregnancy detection and overall herd health. Identifying open cows early and accurately after breeding and calving results in shorter calving intervals. In turn, shorter calving intervals mean increased milk production, a more uniform crop of calves, as well as more efficient rebreeding and the early identification and removal of subfertile cows. Overall good health is the best indicator of optimal reproductive performance. Cows that are compromised by diseases such as BVDV and Johne’s have lower pregnancy rates and increased abortion rates. That’s why assessing and maintaining herd health is critical to reproductive efficiency. IDEXX tests make it easy to detect pregnancy early and conduct routine pregnancy confirmation to optimize reproductive performance. Both IDEXX pregnancy tests detect pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs) to determine pregnancy status. Both tests are accurate and convenient complements to routine palpation and ultrasound examinations.
